What are Volume Units?
When we talk about how much liquid a container can hold, or the space a substance takes up, we're talking about volume. Different parts of the world and different industries use various units to measure volume. The two most common units you'll encounter are gallons and liters.
- Liters (L): This is the primary unit of volume in the metric system, which is used by most countries around the world and is standard in science and medicine. A liter is roughly equal to the volume of a cube that is 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) on each side.
- Gallons (gal): This unit is part of the imperial system and is primarily used in the United States (US gallons) and, historically, in the United Kingdom (Imperial gallons). It's important to note that a US gallon is different from an Imperial gallon! This calculator focuses on US gallons.
